The Destructive Nature of False Teaching
2 Peter 2:1-10a
- - If God did not spare angels
- - if God did not spare the ancient world
- - if he condemned Sodom and Gomorrah
- - if he rescued Lot
then
- - the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials
- - and how to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment
Douglas Moo’s translation of 2 Peter 2:10a: “going after flesh in a passionate longing for defilement.”
General Observations about 2 Peter 2:1-10a
- False teaching is serious business and is destructive to both teacher and follower
- False teachers come from both outside the church and inside the church
- In the New Testament, God exhibits neither patience nor tolerance for false teaching
- The New Testament does not shy away from affirming the most ancient of stories recorded in the Old Testament
- God’s promises of judgment for unbelievers and deliverance for believers are unequivocally taught from the beginning of the Bible to the end
Application from 2 Peter 2:1-10a
