Revelation
The Lamb of God: On His Throne And Among His People
We Are Not Meant to Know Everything - Yet
Revelation 10

➢ Read or quote the verse of the month together:

Revelation 11:15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”

➢ Read Revelation 10 together. Thoughts?

➢ Deuteronomy 29:29, Daniel 12:9 (see both verses below), and Revelation 10:4 indicate that while God has revealed much to us, some of his plan will not be revealed until we stand before Christ (1 Corinthians 13:12). Based on this knowledge, answer the following questions:

    • Do you wish that God had revealed more to you than he has? How can you be content with the knowledge about God and about your life that he has given to you?
    • How would you say that you are doing obeying what he has made known to you (Deuteronomy 29:29)? Do you have a case of, “I want to know it, but I am not so keen on obeying it,”? Suggestions?
    • How does our study in Revelation increase your appetite for knowing God’s Word, and, thus, knowing Jesus more intimately?

➢When have you found God’s Word to be sweet, and when have you found it to be bitter?

➢ What are some ways that you (individually and as a group) can prioritize the application points from the sermon? See the top of page 3 in these notes.

➢ Pray for the missionary assigned to your group!

➢ Bonus question (as in, if there is time): Read 2 Peter 3:1-13 and discuss the delay in Jesus’ return. How does 2 Peter 3 – along with the mighty angel’s oath in Revelation 10:4 that Jesus will return without delay (which means at exactly the right moment) – inform/encourage your witness to the lost?

Louis Brighton: By straddling the entire earth, the angel demonstrates that he – and the mission on which God sent him – will dominate the earth, its history, its people, its present and future – everything.

“Mystery” as used in the NT: A truth that was hidden in the past (in the OT) but has now been revealed in Jesus. (e.g., the mystery of the gospel, the mystery of Gentiles being brought into the family of God, the mystery of our being clothed with immortality, the mystery of our union with Christ, the mystery of lawlessness – although this one does not fit the classic definition given above)

Material That Didn’t Make the Cut

Connect with the Louis Brighton quote above: For the older ones among us, do you remember where you were when you heard the news that JFK was shot? How about the moon landing? The Challenger? 911? COVID shutdowns? Some commentaries have speculated that what happened at the White House on Friday (Trump and Zelensky) will be one of those events. (Please do Not get into a political debate!!!) I doubt it, but this has been a crazy week in world affairs. It is easy to think of powerful people making consequential decisions that shape our world’s structure and future. Never forget that Jesus is King, although he has not been fully revealed to the world yet. – see Isaiah 40:12-17

Sometimes the change that comes in us when we believe in Jesus convicts those around us of their sin. We might be far friendlier to them than we were before we were saved, but the Holy Spirit living in us and exuding the fragrance of Jesus can be offensive to those who have not yielded their lives to King Jesus. On the other hand, the image of Christ in our lives can be attractive to unbelievers.

Application Points from the Sermon

1. Commit to know more about God (through Scripture) than you know about anything else

2. Ask God for a heart that longs for and anticipates Jesus’ Second Coming, whether your life is difficult or easy

3. With Scripture as your guide, learn to appreciate God’s mysterious ways while trusting him for what you cannot understand

Scripture Associated with Revelation 10

Deuteronomy 29:29 The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Is the mighty angel of Revelation 10 Jesus? Possibly. Consider the connections:

Daniel 7:13 I saw in the night visions,

and behold, with the clouds of heaven

there came one like a son of man,

and he came to the Ancient of Days

and was presented before him.

Exodus 13:21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. 22 The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.

Revelation 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

Ezekiel 1:28 (a throne room description): Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around.

Revelation 1:16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.

Matthew 17:1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.

Revelation 1:15 His feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.

Amos 3:7 “For the Lord God does nothing

without revealing his secret

to his servants the prophets.

8 The lion has roared;

who will not fear?

The Lord God has spoken;

who can but prophesy?”

Revelation 5:5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Joel 3:16 The Lord roars from Zion,

and utters his voice from Jerusalem,

and the heavens and the earth quake.

But the Lord is a refuge to his people,

a stronghold to the people of Israel.

Psalm 29:3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters. (See verses 3-9 for a seven-fold description of the voice of Yahweh and its effects)

Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.

Daniel 12:7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream; he raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven and swore by him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time, and that when the shattering of the power of the holy people comes to an end all these things would be finished. 8 I heard, but I did not understand. Then I said, “O my lord, what shall be the outcome of these things?” 9 He said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end.

Hebrews 1:1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

2 Peter 3:8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

Ezekiel 3:1 And he said to me, “Son of man, eat whatever you find here. Eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.” 2 So I opened my mouth, and he gave me this scroll to eat. 3 And he said to me, “Son of man, feed your belly with this scroll that I give you and fill your stomach with it.” Then I ate it, and it was in my mouth as sweet as honey.

Ephesians 6:18 . . . To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

Colossians 1:25 to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

1 Corinthians 15:51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
