Revelation
The Lamb of God: On His Throne And Among His People
The Churches at Philadelphia and Laodicea – A Contrast
Revelation 3:7-22

➢ Read Revelation 3:7-13. What did you learn about the Church at Philadelphia? Is there anything you would like to have clarified? After reading the text, reflect on the following points of application from the sermon:
1. Be faithful in the little things, even if God does not put big opportunities
in your life – but, He most likely will
2. Seek opportunities to spend time with unbelievers for gospel witness
3. Trust Jesus to determine your place in the kingdom
4. Give thanks to God for your forever home in His holy temple

➢ Read Revelation 3:14-22. What did you learn about the Church at Laodicea or what do you need to have clarified? Reflect on the following points of application from the text:
5. Give Jesus the authority to keep you from being lukewarm
6. Sacrifice worldly security for heavenly discipline
7. Open the door to Jesus! (See Song of Solomon 5:2, below)

Extra Notes

Dennis Johnson: This dinner is the marriage supper of the Lamb (Rev 19:9). Jesus’ knock is not that of a homeless traveler, standing outside the locked door of a human heart, seeking shelter. Rather, he is the master of the house, and he will burst through the door in sovereign judgment (James 5:9). The Laodiceans cannot avert his arrival by ignoring his knock, but their response to his warning will determine whether his entrance brings the joy of the banquet or the exposure of their shame.

John 8:34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

Mark 8:38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. Scripture associated with Revelation 3:14-22

Colossians 1:15 He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
